■ STATEMENT (from 3LA)
lang's currently out-of-print debut album, "Shirabe," will be released by 3LA on November 29, 2019. Due to a combination of factors, including a limited press of 300 copies and insufficient distribution, this album never reached many people and is now out of print. While I felt it was a shame to let it go out of print, that wasn't the only reason I wanted to reissue it.
The band lang is evolving dramatically right now. Their lyrics, sound, and live performances are constantly improving. In particular, seeing them radiate such passion on The Tidal Sleep's Japan tour in 2019, I felt strongly that they are taking on new challenges, and are determined to break through something. It may be a bit embarrassing to say, but in this society where peer pressure, stagnation, and resignation are rampant, I find "the future" and "hope" in their positive attitude toward challenges. There's value in music and art, too. I want to support that determination. This isn't a reissue of their first album, a look back at the past, or a one-off, but rather a release to see into the future together. A rough-edged yet timeless mix of passionate hardcore and modern poetry, this first page in the band's history is presented not only to those who know lang now, but also to those who will know them in the future. It also leaves a legacy as a work, including the jacket, artwork, and lyrics. Rather than just passing through it on a streaming service, it's a work that will be well worth the effort if you stop to pick it up and listen to it. Anyone who discovers lang's music in the future will inevitably find their way back to this first album. I believe there will be another encounter waiting there, and something new will be born from it.
■ ABOUT lang
Lang's formation dates back to the late 2000s.
In early 2009, killie and heaven in her arms loudly proclaimed their goal of "changing the music scene," and held the first event of their collaborative project "Choga" (Guest: Koshin). Like many of the audience members who witnessed the event, vocalist Wada and guitarist Ota were inspired and formed a band on their way home, and thus lang was born. It was a rather dramatic beginning for the band, but in the early days they struggled to materialize their musical ambitions. Activities soon stalled, and they nearly disbanded—a period unimaginable for the band they are today.
However, in November 2011, bassist Terai and drummer Yuda (then with Yel Lobe) joined the band, and the band's new lineup was established, and activities began to pick up steam. With a fresh start, the band abandoned most of their existing songs, even with a live performance scheduled for December of the same year. In just two to three weeks, they quickly wrote the tracks "Kagari," "Yaba," and "Sari," which also appeared on their first album. Though they were forced to perform their first live show with the new lineup, the prototype of lang's musical style, combining passionate hardcore (screamo) with Japanese lyrics reminiscent of '70s folk and contemporary poetry, gradually took shape.
The band began recording their first album in December 2012 and finished in April 2013. However, due to difficulties with mixing and mastering, the album wasn't released until June 2014, a full year and a half after production began. While the band members later attributed this to their lack of experience in self-production, various issues, including vocalist Wada's increased workload and guitarist Ota's return to Fukushima, caused them to struggle to move forward as planned. Even when the album was finally released, there was little reaction to it. It wasn't widely distributed in record stores, and promotion wasn't particularly effective. It was primarily sold at live shows. While a limited pressing of 300 copies limited its reach, even now, I think this first album, with its rare Japanese lyrics and passionate hardcore style, deserved more recognition. At the time, their first album only reached a very limited audience.
In 2014, Yuuma (now Toso) joined the band as a second guitarist, and as the band became a five-member band, their setlists began to focus primarily on new songs. This change in lineup meant the band had to rework their sound from scratch. However, with lang's style of "adding vocals after the sound is complete," the band's constant reworking of the sound placed increasing strain on vocalist Wada, who had to adapt to the band's constant reworking of the sound. This five-member lineup continued for about a year until Yuuma left the band in 2015 due to poor health. After Yuuma's departure, the band returned to their original four-member lineup and reworked their sound. From this point on, the instrumentalists began to focus more on vocals, and with Wada's solo career, which had begun as a solo guitarist, the band began to move toward a musical style that not only featured intense sounds but also made greater use of the "words" in Japanese lyrics. As new songs were being created, this was the period when the direction for their second album became clear. He held his first solo live show in October 2016, released the split album "alone again" with Fredelica in April 2017, and in May of the same year performed with Viva Belgrado, who came to Japan from Spain at the invitation of Tokyo Jupiter Records. As the scope of his activities expanded, this collaboration led to him traveling to Spain in February 2018 to record and perform live. His second album, "There is no reply, but sweet wind blew," released in August 2018, was produced by engineer Santi Garcia at Ultramarinos Costa Brava, the studio that has released passionate masterpieces such as Daitro and Sed Non Satiata, and received widespread acclaim, making lang's name known in the scene. Although the timing may differ, in June 2018, lang welcomed new guitarist Takazawa back as a five-piece band. Since the release of their second album, they have been performing live in various venues, and since then, the number of people who have become aware of the name lang has skyrocketed. As if to prove this, in May 2019, the band accompanied Germany's The Tidal Sleep on their Japan tour, where they were greeted by a sold-out audience at Kichijoji WARP in Tokyo, and on October 22nd of the same year, they performed a two-man live show with sassya- (GUEST: NITRODAY) as the final show of their second album release tour, which also sold out. Now, having put an end to their activities "after the second album," the band is preparing to take new action in preparation for 2020. (As of November 2019)
